From Humble Beginnings to a Flourishing Business

Alsum Produce, Inc. started in 1973 as a one-person operation. Glen Alsum bought 50-pound and 100-pound bags of Wisconsin-grown potatoes and onions and repackaged them into 5-, 10-, and 15-pound bags. He then sold them to grocers in the South Central Wisconsin area. Business was good, and Glen doubled his warehouse space to just over 4,000 square feet. The product line was expanded in 1979 to include some of the more common fruit and vegetable items.

Glen Alsum was killed in a plane crash in February 1981, and a third cousin, Larry Alsum, took over as general manager and owner in May 1981.

Today, Alsum Produce has over 140,000 square feet of production and warehouse facilities and employs an average of 120 full-time employees. Along with providing top-quality Wisconsin-grown potatoes and onions, Alsumwe work with a select group of growers and suppliers from around the United States. These long-time partnerships allow Alsum to offer customers a complete line of potatoes and onions as well as fresh fruit and vegetables year-round.

Alsum Produce’s warehouse facilities are modern facilities and all buildings include refrigeration systems to properly cool and store fresh produce. The Company has also invested in and built a modern packaging line that allows us to wash, grade, size and pack potatoes and to grade and pack onions to meet our customers need for quality and variety of potato and onion sizes and packages.

Alsum Farms and Alsum Transport are a sister company and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alsum Produce. Alsum Transport currently has a fleet of 26 tractors and 60 trailers. The truck fleet is used to deliver to almost all of our Wisconsin and Illinois customers, some of our Eastern and Southern U.S. customers, and to haul potatoes and onions from our growers to our packing plant. Alsum Farms operates in the Arena-Spring Green, Wisconsin area. The farming operation grows about 1,300 acres of potatoes. Together, the three companies serve the needs of our customers by making sure they receive a fresh and marketable product, on-time and of unsurpassed quality.
