Packing Shed

Quality produce requires quality care.

It’s not enough to grow and source quality produce — once we have it in our hands, we take every necessary step to ensure Alsum produce stays fresh. Our refrigerated fleet of trucks delivers Alsum fresh fruits and vegetables to our 60,000-square-foot ventilated, environmentally- and humidity-controlled packing sheds in Arena and Friesland, Wisconsin.

Our Healthy Grown® Wisconsin potatoes are cleaned, graded and packed in a fully-automated quality-controlled process that is audited annually by Protected Harvest to ensure sustainability quality standards are met and exceeded. This process includes:

  • Using recycled water to sustainablly clean our Wisconsin potatoes.
  • Sorting potatoes using fully-automated grading and sizing precision electronic equipment and digital x-rays that check for defects.
  • Gently floating the potatoes to the grading line where our quality control team inspects each tuber to ensure it meets Alsum’s high standards for quality, weight and size.
  • Packing tubers using sophisticated computerized packaging equipment that ensures accuracy and optimal fresh produce presentation.
  • Checking fresh produce inventory on a daily basis to ensure freshness and quality.

All our fresh fruits and vegetables are kept cool and dry in a ventilated, humidity-controlled packing shed until they are ready to be transported by our fleet of refrigerated trailers.

Our entire sizing, grading, inspection and packing process meets and exceeds Protected Harvest and the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Good Harvesting and Packing Practices (GHP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Produce Traceability Initiative (PTI) quality and safety standards.
